Carbon Brushes

AC motors use pieces of carbon called carbon brushes to rub against the armature of the motor causing the motor shaft to move when the current alternated direction. Many older machines are designed for easy replacement of these brushes through access points on the outside of the motor casing. These usually look like large flat head screws made of plastic. Newer motors have sealed cases preventing brush replacement.
